Summary

Church 1 or church_01 (known in game as St. Moe's Cathedral) is a tier 4 Point of Interest and a Church. Its architecture is loosely Gothic. The size of the POI means it may need a few days to be explored and looted properly. It has a large interior and many rooms that lead into each other and mazelike basement, in part due to the collapsed walls and stairwells.

Description

St Moe's Cathedral is a (presumably Roman Catholic) Church that has a large sanctuary, a small narthex, an archival room and catacombs. The surrounding area is a grave yard, where parishioners are buried. The front door is barricaded, however the basement is accessible, this leads into an archival area where old books, and likely Baptismal records were stored. The church's main stairwell has collapsed, requiring one to use the catacombs to find a way through. After going further underground, there are piles of rubble in one of the stairwells.

After clearing out the bottom area, one may enter the side stairwell to reach the Sanctuary, where mass would normally be held. The roof has a massive hole, and burnt rubble can be seen, indicating the place was indirectly hit by a bomb. On the altar, a casket is atop it, indicating a funeral mass was taking place. Near the back of the Sanctuary, near the front door, the stairwells to the Choir loft are collapsed and barricaded with barbed wire. There are two confessional booths, with the kneel-er and screen. Exploring the Choir loft will lead one up the central tower, then one may climb the roof, carefully to find the loot in the bell tower.

Strategy

It is advised to come well prepared, as there are feral zombies and specialized zombies. Not to mention how easy it is to get lost in the maze of the catacombs. Be very careful on the roof, one fall can break your leg, even with the Perk Parkour. That being said, this POI is relatively easy compared to other tier 4s. The space in the Sanctuary would make stealth easier to implement. If one is looking for books, and coffins, this is a good POI.

It is not ideal for setting up a base, as zombies can get on the roof.

Trivia

  • There are several context clues to indicate St Moe's Cathedral is a Roman Catholic Church. The key one being the name Cathedral, a church that houses the Bishop of a Diocese. Furthermore, it would make sense effort would be maintained to preserve or at least defend the church, given a Cathedral's cultural and strategic location. This idea is reinforced by the supplies in the bell tower, and that Mass was taking place. However, there are several inaccuracies to a real Cathedral, likely stemming from artistic license, oversight, or avoiding a sensitive topic.
    1. The name St Moe would not be used, instead the name of St. Maurice would be used, as he is a Saint, and Moe is short for Maurice.
    2. There are no statues or crucifixes, given that the game is M rated, a crucifix would not cause any rating issues. This could also be an art related issue
    3. There is no Priest or Bishop zombie, again this might be an artistic limitation, as said zombies would be rare. Furthermore, priests are hard to identify without their vestments.
    4. To have a Cathedral located in the middle of a small rural town is unlikely, however this may be inspired by the Arizona Diocese of Gallop, given the location of Navezgame. But this Gothic Cathedral bares no resemblance to the adobe Cathedral in real life
    5. There is no tabernacle where the Eucharist would be stored.
  • The state of the church indicates it was relatively recently overrun
