The Nuclear Fallout Zone is present as a zone that extends evenly out from the edges of the map. The zone serves as a barrier to keep players away from the edges of all maps including Navezgane and Random Gen maps. Players that walk into the radiation zone will start to lose health and will eventually die if they do not leave. The border of the Nuclear Fallout Zone cannot be easily identified as there are no visual indicators marking it. However it will be immediately apparent a player has entered the zone as your screen will become filled with a green coloured static effect and the Deadly Radiation debuff will be applied.

Zombies seem not to be affected by the radiation, though any living animals that wander into it will die within seconds.

At the end of the radiation zone, a simple gray horizon awaits and if you pass this limit, a simple drop of a ledge is awaiting the player, but instead of dying you reappear a few meters away from it, facing the opposite direction of the ledge.

It's important to note that wearing a hazmat suit will not prevent you from dying via the radiation as it does not provide 100% resistance against radiation damage.

Notes

- When near the Nuclear Fallout Zone it is possible for supply crates to be dropped there, thus being almost unable to get to them. To prevent this from happening, go away from the Nuclear Fallout Zone at the time around the airdrops.

- In Alpha 19, supply drops were reworked to only drop at the very edge of the entrance of the irradiated zone and are no longer dropped within.

History

  • Added around A13 due to bugs happening when you get too far away from the center of the map.
  • On the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One edition of the game the Nuclear Fallout Zone generates infinitely and actually has oceans if the player ventures far enough.
  • Some time before Alpha 20 the Nuclear Fallout Zone existed as a distinct biome. It had its own radioactive dirt, trees, and appearance on top of deadly radiation. As of Alpha 20 it no longer exists as a distinct biome, and the only remnant is the radiation field keeping players away from the edges of the map.
  • Before Alpha 20 the playable area used to be a circle centered on the middle of the map for Random Gen Worlds. As of A20, but possibly earlier, the playable area is now a square, and players are able to get much closer to the corners of the map without dying.

Historical Images

These images are from when this was a distinct biome. The biome no longer exists but the radiation field is still present at map edges.
