In 7 Days to Die, hordes are groups of zombies that spawn and potentially attack the player. These events can occur regularly and escalate in difficulty as the game progresses. There are several types of hordes, including Wandering Hordes, Screamer Hordes, and Blood Moon Hordes.

Types of Hordes

Wandering Hordes

  • Occurrence: Randomly during the day or night
  • Behavior: Wandering Hordes spawn away from a player and then move in a random direction across the map. They may or may not detect the player. If they detect a player, they will attack. If the horde does not detect any players, they will continue walking in a straight line for a short distance before finally stopping. The zombies will then wander around as individuals.
  • Difficulty: They can vary in size and composition, with more challenging hordes appearing as the Game Stage increases; early on, they might consist of weaker zombies or animals, while later hordes include stronger and faster variants.
  • Strategy: Stay aware of your surroundings and have escape routes planned. Stay quiet to prevent the wandering horde from detecting you as it passes by, or engage the horde in an open area where you have more maneuverability and can pick off zombies individually.

Screamer Hordes

  • Occurrence: Triggered by a Screamer zombie spotting a player or hearing excessive noise. Screamers are attracted by high levels of activity affected the Heat Map.
  • Behavior: When a Screamer Zombie spots detects a player, it screams and calls in a horde. The size and strength of the horde depend on the current game stage.
  • Difficulty: Varies; early game Screamers might call in smaller hordes, while later game stages can summon larger and more dangerous groups.
  • Strategy: Eliminate Screamer Zombies quickly before they call for reinforcements. Keep noise levels low by using silent tools and weapons when possible.

Blood Moon Hordes

  • Occurrence: By default Game Settings, predictably every 7th night
  • Behavior: Blood Moon Hordes are significantly larger and more aggressive than regular hordes. They spawn in waves and actively seek out players, regardless of their location. The zombies can sense the player through walls and other obstacles.
  • Difficulty: Increases with game stage, with more zombies and stronger variants appearing as game stage increases.
  • Strategy: Hiding will not work, as Blood Moon Hordes automatically sense all players. Instead, focus on building strong defenses, having adequate supplies of ammunition, and preparing fallback positions.

Preparation and Survival Tips

  • Fortifications: Build strong bases with layered defenses. Use traps, reinforced walls, and elevated positions to gain an advantage over hordes.
  • Weapons and Ammunition: Stockpile a variety of weapons and ample ammunition. Consider melee weapons for quieter, close-quarter combat and firearms for when you need to eliminate zombies quickly.
  • Medical Supplies: Keep a supply of first aid kits, bandages, and other healing items to recover from injuries sustained during horde attacks.
  • Escape Routes: Design your base with multiple exits and fallback positions. Being able to retreat and regroup can be crucial during overwhelming horde attacks.
  • Communication and Teamwork: If playing in multiplayer mode, coordinate with teammates to cover multiple angles and support each other during horde attacks.
