I don't believe that the zombie hordes are based on the game day any more, there is definately the Blood Moon horde, but from reading the xml file I think the make up and size of the hordes is based on the levels of the top 5 characters.

What I've read/heard in dev updates and other places, is that hordes are based on how good a survivor is doing, which is based on his level, times the survivor had died and probably some other statistics I can't recall at the moment. The Blood Moon Horde spawns zombies based on this measurement of the survivor's ability to survive. I'm not sure if it also considers the days that have passed. i.e if it's day 7 or day 49.
I think hordes on other days also vary on this level/death based system, and the chance of spawning depends on the heatmap. If I remember correctly there used to be a guaranteed dog horde on day 5, which is no longer the case. I noticed a dog horde can still be spawned, not sure if it is limited to a certain day of the week. I also can't confirm if day 6 and 8 are still safe days, or if they can spawn hordes now.
This all is based on single player and I've no idea about multiplayer and its hordes. What xml file(s) are dealing with this stuff? I'd like to read about it some more.

What you are saying definitely gels with what I am experiencing (in single player and multiplayer). The gamestages.xml has some good comments at the top explaining how spawning works. I am not sure however if there are some other parameters like game day that effect it as well.
It is definately possible to get a spawn the morning after a blood moon, I have been happily cleanup the spikes around the camp only to be interrupted by a wondering mob of 20 or more zombies.
To counter point this, there is still a spawning.xml file that has spawning based on game day, so it is possible that both are active to varying degrees.

Wandering Horde "Holidays"

"They do not appear in the days surrounding a weekly night horde, for example days 6, 7, and 8."

BS, I can't be the only one who's had the wandering hordes come through at about 8-9 PM on blood moon days and wreck my passive defenses (barbed wire, spikes, etc) without enough time to repair them for the actual event? --T3hp0larbear (talk) 18:32, 26 November 2017 (UTC)
