Gampedia Update Affecting Pages

I am placing this comment at the top so that it's very visible. Gamepedia was updated on February 3, after-which page formatting has been affected (infoboxes have shifted left) and the search function stopped working.

I've posted a notice on this page: 982-upgrade-to-mediawiki-1-26-happening-february-3. It looks like other wikis have been reporting issues as well and they've been addressing them rather quickly.

If I get any update I'll pass it along here.

Update 05:39, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

I received more information from an editor of another wiki:

Quote from Navonil
hi, I am a editor like you in Empyrion wiki.., we have same issue....what I found out is that is the place where advert banner goes, if you turn-off your ad-block you will see a advert appear there..before this update , if ad-block block some advert, wiki it don't reserve space for that ad, now they do only for that place, they don't reserve place for the banner from top and bottom of the page though..I hope they fix this issue but that is how the page actually intended to look like as you suppose to not use ad-block

I do indeed use Ghostery for ad blocking. However, pausing it and reloading affected pages doens't seem to resolve the problem for me. Anyone else seeing the problem?

Update 05:35, 6 February 2016 (UTC)

The search feature is working again. Not sure when, but it's working and that's what counts.

Update & Work-around 03:43, 9 February 2016 (UTC)

It has been verified that the unexpected spacing is being caused by adblocking software client-side. I received this message a few days ago:

BriannaMCR

Hey there! Yes, Navonil is correct. That space is usually an ad placement on the wiki, and if you're using some kind of ad-blocking program it may be causing that problem. We have plans to make some changes to our ad programs in the coming months, so there may be some minor changes like this in the meantime.

One work-around is to add {{clear}} to the top of affected pages, as I have done on Ak_47 as a test. Not sure how important it is that we get that added to every affected page, given that they may be addressing it "in the coming months," however long that may be.

Outdated Crafting Tables

Are we removing these form the wiki since they are now outdated? They seem pretty useless at this point and feel like clutter. — Wi7less (talk) 15:47, 10 January 2016 (UTC)

Controllish (talk) 02:16, 24 January 2016 (UTC) I have been updating a lot of the wiki and the only problem I have with removing the crafting grids is that then removes the recipe from the main pages. If there's a way to still show the recipes without the grid , I would love to know. Example being 'Crafting Ammo" page, If you go into "shotgun shell" and removed the grid, then go back into the "crafting-ammo" page, "shotgun shells" won't even show up as an craft able ammo. Hope this makes sense, and maybe someone knows a way around it.?.?Controllish (talk) 02:16, 24 January 2016 (UTC)

I have been working through articles removing the grid where I can quickly. I've been using the AK-47 crafting section as a template when replacing the grid.

In instances where a page needs more work to remove the grid and replace it with useful information, such as with steel arrowhead, I mark the page with the {{Cleanup|Reason=Your Reason}} tag and mention the crafting grid in the reason for cleanup. Then hopefully someone can circle back and address the problems.

It may be worth the effort in creating a new maintenance category simply for pages containing the old grid, in order to facilitate the cleanup process. I'm willing to lead that if there is interest.

Controllish (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2016 (UTC)Like I said the problem , and I reiterate, is now that the crafting grid has been removed from the weapons pages individually. When you go into the "crafting" section of the wiki and click "weapons" the entire list is empty. Before the grids were removed all the craft able weapons in the game where listed there. Now it's empty (besides mines). I know the grid is outdated, but having it sit at the bottom of the page under "outdated" I think is much better than them not showing up at all in major lists. The problem is the list for "craftable-weapons" pulls a list of craft able weapons by the crafting grid on each page. Once you remove those grids the wiki doesn't think they are craft able. So it drops them from the lists. If there was a better way to have the wiki to pull the lists NOT based on crafting grid that would be awesome, but currently there is not and removing them removes them from all craft able lists. I unfortunately do not have the time to go back and add the grids to every page to make them show back up again. So it will have to stay like it is now. Controllish (talk) 19:47, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

I have changed the DPL-generated table on the page Craftable_weapons so that it no longer searches based on a page's use of the crafting grid template. It now searches for items that are in both categories: weapons + craftable_items. The next steps are to 1) make sure all weapons that are craftable are in both the weapons and the craftable_items categories (the grid template automatically added the page to the category craftable_item) and 2) make sure that items currently in the list are indeed craftable weapons. For example, I don't know that Barbed_Fence_Wire should logically be considered a weapon.
At any rate, have a look at the table now and let me know what you think. If that works, it will be the same fix for other such tables.

Controllish (talk) 22:39, 2 February 2016 (UTC) Awesome man! I will give it a look when I get home and get off the mobile version of the site . But in theory that should work fine . Glad you knew how I change that a because I tried multiple times and kept getting half hazard results . If the change works , could it applied to other sections of the craftin section? As far as I'm concerned if you can get the templates to pull differently, I will gladly help you yank all the crafting grid stuff off the pages . That was my original intent before I hit the brick wall of it pulling lists by crafting grid . Thanks again. I'll check when I get home and of all is well, I will respond again . Controllish (talk) 22:39, 2 February 2016 (UTC)

I got on a roll and couldn't stop...
I have created a Template:Recipe that can be used on all craft-able items to list the required items, just like what is on Ak_47. I have also created a brand-new DPL query to replace the current one in this page: Craftable_weapons, which is still using the old DPL search, which depends on the grid to pull "required materials" (notice all the empty fields in that table now).
Once we get all craft-able weapons using the Template:Recipe, we can change the Craftable_weapons search page to use the new DPL query that pulls in all the ingredients properly.
Here is a test DPL query based on items in Category:Weapon and containing the new Template:Recipe. So far the "Required Materials" cells are properly completed, but there are only six items using the Template:Recipe so far. I want to test a bit more, especially with other people using the Template:Recipe to see how the DPL search gets populated in various situations—there are a lot of moving parts and a lot of places things can go wrong so I want to make sure it all works as expected before changing the original DPL search.
If this becomes the way forward, I can create a central page with clear instructions so others can help, as there are currently 215 more pages containing the grid.

Controllish (talk) 16:10, 3 February 2016 (UTC) Great work man! I got on and looked around and everything seems to be populating correctly now. I see where you were talking about the barbeb wire fence and such being a weapon. i think we can change it to a trap though and it show up in the traps section rather than the weapon. I will start yanking grid's off too in what I find. I have been working on this Wiki for about a month now, so almost everything has been at least touched at this point. I have started just clicking the random page button and updating what pops up in front of me. I have a post out on the official forums keeping up with my changes anda few other people go there to keep up with their changes as well if you're interested. I am very busy with work/school, so my time to help has tapered off, but I will do what i can. Controllish (talk) 16:10, 3 February 2016 (UTC)

The Grid Is Dead, Long Live The Recipe

The grid has been removed from all craft-able items that aren't marked as 'removed from the game.' This was a big step towards getting the wiki updated and cleaned up and just in time for big changes in naming conventions coming with A14!

More details regarding killing the grid on the cleanup project page.

Awesome job! — Game widow (talk) 14:26, 23 February 2016 (UTC)
It turns out the grid is more pervasive than I thought. There are multiple templates that generate different versions.
Back to killing the grid!

A14 Update

We need to get organized to tackle the changes in A14 and how they affect the wiki. Below is just a brain-dump of things that need done. Feel free to expand the list as necessary.

  • Many items have been renamed, which means we need to rename wiki pages, which means we need to also address each and every "whatlinkshere" special page for pages renamed. Otherwise we'll have a lot of redirects and it will become a rat's nest of redirects.
  • Need to add new pages to document items added in A14. I have received updated icons from the Pimps and can provide those for pages as needed (I don't have icons for skills/perks yet, but the request is in). Below is a list of new items in A14 that need pages. Feel free to add items to this list:

Red links indicate pages not-yet-created. Clicking on the link will give you the option to create the page.

Page name Icon Comment
Military Fiber MilitaryFiber.png
Cement Mixer CementMixer.png Page created but still needs expansion.
Workbench Workbench.png Page created but still needs expansion.
Cigar Cigar.png
Animal Hide Poncho AnimalHidePoncho.png Page created but still needs expansion.
Army Pants ArmyPants.png (may be more appropriate to have a generic "Cloth Pants" page, which follows the items.xml organization)
Army Shirt ArmyShirt.png (may be more appropriate to have a generic "Long Cloth Shirts" page, which follows the items.xml organization)
Military Boots MilitaryBoots.png (may be more appropriate to have a generic "Boots" page)
Military Vest MilitaryVest.png
Military Gloves MilitaryGloves.png
Shirt Shirt.png (may be more appropriate to have a generic "Shirts" page)
Quest QuestMaster.png
Challenge Quest ChallengeQuestMaster.png
Treasure Quest TreasureQuestMaster.png
Human Turd Turd.png (surprising that no one has documented this yet)
  • All of the skills/perks need documented (see list below for what's needed)
Good progress has been made. There is a list of skills and perks that can be used to create new articles or expand existing ones. Some are very, very "stubby" and need expansion.
  • New and changed menus
  • Quests

Update: May 7, 2016

The process of updating the wiki with all of the new information from A14 is going well. We have a couple of dedicated, consistent editors as well as a horde of drive-by editors that together are getting good information in the articles. We need both types—thank you all!

We have a lot of the critical, new items from A14 documented now, I believe. If something is missing, please let us know here.

There are still quite a few of the skills and perks that need documented or expanded. Priorities for expansion are:

See the list below for articles that need created (red links) as well as existing articles that likely need expanded.

Please note; to reduce ambiguity, please create new skill pages with a trailing (Skill) designation in the title. For example, Medicine (Skill). We also need to go through and rename all existing skills and redirect their links.

Update May 11, 2016

I've received additional icons and uploaded new ones and added them to the table above. I'm still waiting on approval from the Pimps to receive the icons for skills and perks. Once I get an update on that I'll pass it along here.

That was quick...new Icons have been sent. I'll upload them over the next few days as I process them (convert file type and make the background transparent).

The new GUI icons (skills, perks, etc) are being uploaded to Category:GUI_Icon_Images. They easily integrate into sentences to illustrate GUI navigation. Map Window#Waypoints is an example of one way they can be used in articles.

Venture forth and illustrate some articles!

Update May 21, 2016

JonPardon did most of the hard work to create an Infobox template specifically for skills, which has now been deployed to the skills we have currently documented. The template is young and basic and still needs a bit of tweaking but it's functional and best of all, it's not mis-categorizing articles like the item infobox was.

More icons have been uploaded to Category:GUI_Icon_Images. It's a slow process mainly because the file type needs to be converted. If there is an icon you need but can't find, let me know by posting here.

Alpha 15 (Experimental)

A lot has changed in the alpha 15 update and I have been updating a few pages on the wiki. Then it occurred to me that the build is still Experimental and therefor not everybody is playing it.

What is the best way to deal with this?

  • Should we update the pages to the latest (and thus experimental) build. Players playing alpha 14 build will be missing the information. On the other hand, they probably know the build by now and don't need the wiki
  • Should we wait until Alpha 15 is officially released and keep the pages as they are. Changing pages with alpha 14 information seems like a waste of time, better wait for the release of alpha 15 in that case
  • Should we add the changes for alpha 15 in addition to the information for alpha 14 as in Iron Pickaxe#Crafting. Seems like a lot of work for a short time, better wait and do nothing imo

I think the first option would be the best. It's just a matter of time before alpha 15 is released and that way we can have at least a part of the wiki up to date for it, as a lot has been changed.

Please share your thoughts, I will sit tight for now to not ruin the wiki. JonPardon (talk) 23:54, 20 September 2016 (UTC)

Late response, I know. I don't think anyone worries that you will "ruin the wiki." You've proven you can edit properly.  ;)
I agree with your first option above.
GrayBeard_Actual (talk)
Following the latest rumors, Alpha 15 will be released soon. Assuming this means in a couple of days, this whole thing is no longer an issue i guess :P. Let's update the wiki to A15!
