The controls used to play 7 Days to Die combine keyboard keys, the mouse, and the mouse buttons. All key bindings and mouse settings can be changed using the Controls tab found in the Options tab on the main game menu accessed via the Esc key.

Movement

  • Mouse
Controls direction the character is looking. Moving forward will be in the look direction.
  • W, A, S, D
Moves the character. W is used to move forward, S is used to move backwards, A is used to move sideways to the left, and D is used to move sideways to the right.
  • Space Bar
Used to jump. The player's character can jump 1 block high. It is possible to jump higher by investing skill points into Parkour.
  • Left Shift
Hold to run while moving. Running uses your Stamina. There is no "toggle run" option.
  • C
Hold to crouch. Characters will be in Stealth mode while crouched.
  • Ctrl Key
Toggles crouched status. Characters will be in Stealth mode while crouched.

Actions

  • Keyboard White Mouse Left.png Left Click
Primary Action button. Varies depending on type of held item.
  • If no item is being held, will result in a basic melee attack with fists.
  • For melee weapons and tools, uses the item's basic attack.
  • For ranged weapons, fires the weapon. Press & hold to draw a bow to full strength before firing.
  • For placeable blocks/items such as Building Blocks, will rotate the block/item.
  • For throwable items such as Small Stones and Pipe Bombs, throws the item. Press & hold to increase projectile throw distance.
  • For consumables such as food or First Aid Bandagees, this action will consume one unit.
  • Keyboard White Mouse Right.png Right Click
Secondary Action button. Varies depending on type of held item.
  • If no item is being held, will result in a power melee attack with fists.
  • For melee weapons, uses the item's power attack. This uses more Stamina and blocks Stamina regeneration for a short time.
  • For repair/building tools such as the Stone Axe, will attempt to repair the block if damaged, or upgrade blocks into a stronger material if the block is not damaged.
  • For ranged weapons, press & hold to aim down sights for greater accuracy.
  • For throwable explosives such as Pipe Bombs or Grenades, will ignite the fuse or activate the grenade.
  • For placeable blocks/items such as Building Blocks, will place the block/item at the selected area.
  • Keyboard White Mouse Middle.png Mousewheel
Used to control Weapon and Map Window zoom or to cycle the selected slot on the Toolbelt.
  • E
Interact key. Interacts with targeted object. Press & hold to access an object's radial menu instead.
  • R
Reload key, or if a container has been opened, Loot All key.
  • Reload held item/weapon. Press & hold to bring up the item/weapon's radial menu instead.
  • Some Weapons will have a radial menu to select alternate ammunition types.
  • Also, while looting, will take all items from a container that has been opened.
  • F
Used to switch on/off the Flashlight.
  • G
Used to drop the currently selected object from the Toolbelt. This key can be dangerous if accidentally pressed.

Menu Access

  • Esc
Opens the main game menu. Pauses game if playing single player.
  • Tab Key
Opens the Crafting Window. Press & hold to open the Main UI radial menu.
  • B
Used to open and close the Character Window.
  • M
Used to open and close the Map Window.
  • N
Used to open and close the Skills Window.
  • O
Used to open and close the Quests Window.
  • Y
Used to open and close the Journal Window.
  • I
Used to open and close the Players/Scoreboard Window.

Keybinds for Objects

PC

On the PC version, to place an object into a location, first drag the item from your Inventory and drop it into your Toolbelt. Select the item on your Toolbelt so that it is being held. Once it is selected, a green silhouette of the item will appear, click Keyboard White Mouse Left.png if you want to rotate the object and then click Keyboard White Mouse Right.png to place it. The silhouette will turn red if it cannot be placed in certain areas.

After its been placed, to interact with it press E and if removing and replacing it somewhere else is desired press and hold the E key and using the Mouse to hover over the Hand Icon that says Take and release E to begin removing the object. A timer indicating how long it will take to remove it will appear. Be sure to not interact with anything during that time as doing so will cancel the removal. The item will be placed into your Inventory ready to be placed again or stored away.

Console

Note: Xbox Series X icons will appear first and then PS5 after
On the Console version, to place an object into a location, first drag the item from your Inventory and drop it into your Toolbelt. While viewing the area where you will place the object, select it by pressing XboxOne RT.png/PS4 R1.png and XboxOne LT.png/PS4 L1.png to scroll to the item. Once it is highlighted a green silhouette of the item will appear, press XboxOne RT.png/PS4 R2.png if you want to rotate the object otherwise just press XboxOne LT.png/PS4 L2.png to place it. The silhouette will turn red if it cannot be placed in certain areas. After its been placed, to interact with it press XboxOne Y.png or PS4 Triangle.png and if removing and replacing it somewhere else is desired press and hold XboxOne Y.png or PS4 Triangle.png and using the Left Analog hover over the Hand Icon that says Take and release XboxOne Y.png or PS4 Triangle.png to begin removing the object. A timer indicating how long it will take to remove it will appear. Be sure to not interact with anything during that time as doing so will cancel the removal. The item will be placed into your Inventory ready to be placed again or stored away.
