Food is an essential part of 7 Days to Die. Consuming food will add to your Fullness, whilst consuming a drink will add to your Hydration. Some consumables will add to both.
Fullness and Hydration will deplete over time. Physical activities such as mining will deplete Fullness faster and hotter biomes will increase the rate Hydration depletes.
Consuming food and drink does not instantly fill up Fullness/Hydration. The amount provided by the food and drink will display in the bottom left corner and is slowly added to the player. The consumed items stack, for example eating a Grilled Meat will add 10. A second one will add another 10 to the amount and so on.
It is possible to consume more than your max value (100 at the beginning and +1 for every level of the player). Doing so will keep your food/water level full for longer.
Some items will give you a buff on top of the Fullness/Hydration, see tables below.
Most food and drink recipes are unlocked with the Food crafting skill. There are exceptions, such as Blackstrap Coffee, which requires The Art of Mining Vol 4 skill book.
